How to prevent clogged drain during busiest time for plumbers

he Friday after Thanksgiving is expected to be one of the busier days for plumbers.

Part of the problem is that the term “garbage disposal” is actually very misleading.

The garbage disposal was designed to get rid of small bits of food on plates after they have already been cleaned off in the trash.

However, many people often dump everything right into the sink and hope it goes down and that’s when the professionals have to come in.

According to Thad Ellet of Thad Ellet Plumbing, they will see a 25% increase in calls the Friday after Thanksgiving.

This is because the items that cause the most blockages, come from the ingredients in traditional Thanksgiving foods. Egg shells, grease, fats and oils, small bones, and peels from potatoes and vegetables cause the most blockages.

And if you do end up having a blockage, do not pour drain cleaning chemicals down your pipes.

“So if I can stress anything, if a customer does have a stoppage, you can try whatever you normally do to try and get it before you have to call a professional. But if you know in the back of your head that you’re going to need to call a professional, don’t put any drain cleaning chemicals down. And drain cleaning chemicals are preventative maintenance. So if you have a blockage, it’s not going to clear that blockage,” said Ellet.

If you do end up putting chemicals down your drain, you will be advised on how to best dilute the chemical solution.

Now what should you put down your garbage disposal?

Ellet said you should always run cold water to solidify any fats or oils that got stuck in the pipes. And in order to clean your blades, you can stick citrus peels or even ice cubes down the drain.

As long as you don’t put any of the problem items down your drain, you shouldn’t have any issues.

If you do end up having to call in the professionals, plumbers at Thad Ellet Plumbing are taking many precautions, such as wearing masks and social distancing as much as possible.

But they first must assess the situation.

“Our customers have been really good about being honest. If they’ve been feeling bad, or if they’re awaiting test results, and we’ve had some customers that are. And that’s when we have to make those decisions,” said Ellet. “We kinda triage the situation. Is this an emergency case, or is this something that can wait?”

Because the day after Thanksgiving is one of the busiest days for plumbers, don’t be surprised if they have to make multiple visits in a day.

Plumbing Tips That Can Save You A Bundle

This article is going to provide you with well proven advice about plumbing. Sometimes you are not sure about what you can trust and what you cannot. Use the great tips and tricks that have been gathered here and you can be assured you are getting tried and true advice. You always want to solder correctly, the biggest mistake most people make when soldering is failing to get the interior of the fitting and the exterior of the pipe clean and shiny. Polish these surfaces with a fine emery clot until bright. When soldering, never heat the pipe, but instead heat the fitting. Doing so allows the solder to be drawn into the fitting by capillary action. Do not pour grease or oil down any of your household drains. Put them in containers and place in the fridge until they are solid, then throw them away. If you pour them down the drain, they can solidify in cold pipes. These solid masses will clog your pipes and are very difficult to remove. Do not use the liquid cleaning supplies that are designed to clear clogs. These cleaners are harmful and can damage your pipes as they clear the clog. Instead of using damaging liquids, use a plunger or a plumbing snake. These are much more effective and will not harm pipes. The next time you have a clogged drain, avoid the simple solution of dumping drain-clearing chemicals into the pipes. While this method involves the least amount of effort, the chemicals in these liquid cleaners are destructive to your piping. Instead, consider using a little bit of elbow grease with a plunger, snake, or other device designed to clear your clog without chemicals. Periodically check your pipes for leaks and cracks. These can be forgotten, since pipes are usually hidden away, but checking for leaks and cracks can help you identify a small problem before a big problem occurs. You may have to enlist the help of a family member to turn on and off the water stream as you are checking. As you can see, plumbing is not rocket science. All you need to do is to find reliable sources that will give you great tips on addressing plumbing problems. The time you invest in educating yourself on plumbing issues will be time well-spent, because it will save you a lot of money in the long run.

The holiday season is always full of fun and excitement

“Your plumbing system is getting more taxed than it normally is because you have more guest in the house, more volume,” said Josh Blassingame with Blassingame Plumbing.

Blassingame said this is the busiest time of year and around 90 percent of his calls are about clogs.

“Just because it can flush doesn’t mean it should flush. Please use the trash can. Anything from feminine hygiene products to wipes it doesn’t need to go down the drain. Just stick with toilet paper and what else needs to go down the toilet.”

Blassingame said he also gets several calls about clogs in the kitchen.

Recent Stories from kxxv.com

“Everybody thinks I’m chasing it with hot water, I’m just gonna pour that grease down the drain,” said Blassingame. “Problem is that you have a trap underneath your sink. When that grease hits that water it’s gonna solidify.”

Blassingame says it’s important to throw bones and other food items in the trash instead of down your sink because your garbage disposal can clog up too.

“Disposal can handle most things but stuff like potato peelings and celery string, things like that you don’t want to put down the drain. Even rice,” said Blassingame.

Blassingame say when you dump food down your disposal, do it gradually and make sure you use plenty of water to wash it down.

Blassingame also said if your handy enough, underneath your disposal you can easily press the reset button and use an Alan wrench to un-jam and reset your disposal. Just make sure the power is off.

Things That You Need To Know About Plumbing

Every once in a while, we have questions about plumbing. Knowing how to take care of your system and fixing minor issues can save you a lot of money. This article will help you do this, so you will be ready to fix any plumbing problem that crops up. Do not put cooking oils, fat, or grease, down your drain. These fats cause clogs by solidifying in pipes. To properly dispose of fats, put them in a bowl with a lid that you can dispose of. Once it gets hard, throw it in the trash or compost bin. If your sink is letting rusty water out and it will not drain, it is mostly likely because of the biological scum and grease that is built up in the pipes. You need to have your drains professionally cleaned, allowing maximum flow through your drains. Your drains must be open completely. If you have unwanted water that drains in your dishwasher, it’s probably due to the kitchen sink’s hose being improperly installed. The hose between the kitchen sink and the dishwasher has to have a peak in the middle so that the water can’t wash back in the wrong direction. Don’t shrug off that trickle coming from your toilet as a small problem. Even the tiniest leak can be quite expensive in the long run as you end up wasting potentially hundreds of gallons of water. See if you can find the root of the leak, or seek out professional advice, and keep your toilet running efficiently. You should drain all of the water out of the tank of your hot water heater at least once every three to six months. Draining all of the water out of the tank helps to prevent sediment build-up at the bottom of the tank. This sediment can cause the tank to bang or to heat less efficiently. With a little bit of plumbing, you can route water anywhere you want in your home. Doing so, makes it possible to live anywhere and adds convenience to any room – but done wrong can mean a financial disaster! Keep the wisdom of this article in mind and you can keep the water flowing where you want but in ways you can handle.
