Plumping Help And Tips That Anyone Can Use

Good plumbing maintenance is relatively easy, but failing to keep up with it can mean costly repairs. Here are some good ways you can take care of your plumbing, either yourself or with the help of a licensed professional. Take care of your house now and it will beneift you in the future. Act quickly if your pipes freeze! Shut off the water and open the faucet, enabling it to drain when it thaws. Starting with the faucet, and working your way to the iced-up area, aim a propane torch or hairdryer at the pipe – this will quickly defrost it. You could also wrap the pipe in a heating pad or aim a heat lamp at it, but this will take quite some time. A last resort is to wrap the pipe in rags and pour boiling water over it. If your pipes bang when you turn on the water, and all the pipes are anchored correctly, you should add some straps or cushion the pipes with a rubber blanket. There may be times when you will need to do both. Make sure that if you have copper pipes, you are not using galvanized straps. To prevent the pipes from freezing, it is advisable to seal off air vents, cracks and access doors. In order to keep the heat in and the cold out, you can try using insulation or caulk. In the event a leak occurs, make it a point to remind everyone where the master circuit breaker is so it can be shut off immediately. One of the things that you can do to maximize the security of your home is to seal all of the cracks in your outdoor faucets. Even a tiny crack can intensify as the season progresses and lead to serious problems down the road. Reduce drips and leaks for optimal protection. Make sure you clean out overflow holes in your kitchen and bathroom sinks on a regular basis. These holes are intended to act as an emergency fail-safe to prevent spillage from a full sink, but if they are clogged they can’t do their job. You can clean out an overflow hole using the same techniques you would for a clogged drain. With the proper knowledge, you can accomplish plumbing tasks, if you take the time to learn and perform all of the steps correctly. Now that you have the information that you need, in order to accomplish your plumbing needs, don’t waste any time trying to fix your plumbing problems.

How to prevent clogged drain during busiest time for plumbers

he Friday after Thanksgiving is expected to be one of the busier days for plumbers.

Part of the problem is that the term “garbage disposal” is actually very misleading.

The garbage disposal was designed to get rid of small bits of food on plates after they have already been cleaned off in the trash.

However, many people often dump everything right into the sink and hope it goes down and that’s when the professionals have to come in.

According to Thad Ellet of Thad Ellet Plumbing, they will see a 25% increase in calls the Friday after Thanksgiving.

This is because the items that cause the most blockages, come from the ingredients in traditional Thanksgiving foods. Egg shells, grease, fats and oils, small bones, and peels from potatoes and vegetables cause the most blockages.

And if you do end up having a blockage, do not pour drain cleaning chemicals down your pipes.

“So if I can stress anything, if a customer does have a stoppage, you can try whatever you normally do to try and get it before you have to call a professional. But if you know in the back of your head that you’re going to need to call a professional, don’t put any drain cleaning chemicals down. And drain cleaning chemicals are preventative maintenance. So if you have a blockage, it’s not going to clear that blockage,” said Ellet.

If you do end up putting chemicals down your drain, you will be advised on how to best dilute the chemical solution.

Now what should you put down your garbage disposal?

Ellet said you should always run cold water to solidify any fats or oils that got stuck in the pipes. And in order to clean your blades, you can stick citrus peels or even ice cubes down the drain.

As long as you don’t put any of the problem items down your drain, you shouldn’t have any issues.

If you do end up having to call in the professionals, plumbers at Thad Ellet Plumbing are taking many precautions, such as wearing masks and social distancing as much as possible.

But they first must assess the situation.

“Our customers have been really good about being honest. If they’ve been feeling bad, or if they’re awaiting test results, and we’ve had some customers that are. And that’s when we have to make those decisions,” said Ellet. “We kinda triage the situation. Is this an emergency case, or is this something that can wait?”

Because the day after Thanksgiving is one of the busiest days for plumbers, don’t be surprised if they have to make multiple visits in a day.
