The holiday season is always full of fun and excitement

“Your plumbing system is getting more taxed than it normally is because you have more guest in the house, more volume,” said Josh Blassingame with Blassingame Plumbing.

Blassingame said this is the busiest time of year and around 90 percent of his calls are about clogs.

“Just because it can flush doesn’t mean it should flush. Please use the trash can. Anything from feminine hygiene products to wipes it doesn’t need to go down the drain. Just stick with toilet paper and what else needs to go down the toilet.”

Blassingame said he also gets several calls about clogs in the kitchen.

“Everybody thinks I’m chasing it with hot water, I’m just gonna pour that grease down the drain,” said Blassingame. “Problem is that you have a trap underneath your sink. When that grease hits that water it’s gonna solidify.”

Blassingame says it’s important to throw bones and other food items in the trash instead of down your sink because your garbage disposal can clog up too.

“Disposal can handle most things but stuff like potato peelings and celery string, things like that you don’t want to put down the drain. Even rice,” said Blassingame.

Blassingame say when you dump food down your disposal, do it gradually and make sure you use plenty of water to wash it down.

Blassingame also said if your handy enough, underneath your disposal you can easily press the reset button and use an Alan wrench to un-jam and reset your disposal. Just make sure the power is off.

You Can Teach Yourself To Handle Plumbing Problems

A problem with your plumbing can happen anytime. If it does, you need to know what to do about it. It is possible for you to take care of many of these problems on your own. Here are some helpful tips to teach you how to handle plumbing problems yourself. Never pay for a plumbing job completely until they have finished the job. You may need to pay some money in the beginning, though you should not pay the full cost until you can be certain that the job was done correctly. It is good to know that the plumber did everything as promised before he gets his money. If your toilet gets clogged, your plunger is not fixing it, and your water level inside of the toilet appears low, you can sometimes fix the problem by dumping warm water into your toilet at waist level (or maybe even a little higher). Do this every time the water level gets too low. If a plumbing project is in your future, know two things: what tools you have, and how you are supposed to use them. You should read the manual with any new tool you purchase. If you don’t have the manual, look online or at your local library for more information. You should do the same amount of research on the steps required for your project. Make sure you plan before you try any kind of repair, as it can be costly to fix a mistake. If your toilet is slow to flush, add some white vinegar to the overflow tube. White vinegar helps the water from your tank to flow quickly, which will make the toilet flush faster. It is recommended that you use about a quart of the vinegar and let it stay there for at least an hour before flushing. Taking preemptive action to fix a strange smelling kitchen sink can be a good way to keep your kitchen smelling great. Make sure not to throw hair or grease into your sink. Use baking soda if you have a strange smell coming from your drain. Make sure you use your garbage disposal if you have one to grind up any food and use water while doing this to prevent damage to the blades of the garbage disposal. Make sure you clean out overflow holes in your kitchen and bathroom sinks on a regular basis. These holes are intended to act as an emergency fail-safe to prevent spillage from a full sink, but if they are clogged they can’t do their job. You can clean out an overflow hole using the same techniques you would for a clogged drain. You can check your toilet for leaks by adding a few drops of food coloring, Kool Aid or some coffee grounds to the water in the toilet’s tank (not the water in the bowl). Check the water in the bowl after a half hour or so. If any of the coloring agent is visible in the water in the bowl, the tank is leaking, and you will have to have it repaired. Some people have problems with their plumbing system in that the pipes sweat and drip condensation. You do not have to hire a plumber to take care of this nuisance. You can purchase self-adhesive drip tape from your local hardware store. This drip tape will insulate your “sweating” pipes which are dripping with moisture built up from condensation. To make sure the tape sticks firmly, dry the pipe thoroughly before applying the tape. Keep your garbage disposal clean to make sure it lasts for awhile. In order to keep it clean, you can use a mixture of dish soap, cherry pits and lemon rinds which will keep the disposal running smooth and smelling fresh. If you require the services of a plumber, be sure to check them out prior to hiring them. Some plumbers just don’t know how to handle certain tasks which could make the problem worse. Always look at plumber reviews, or ask friends and family if they can recommend one. To summarize, you are looking for advice on your plumbing project but want to be sure that the information you are using has been tested over time. Hopefully you will find this to be true of the information in this article. Use this great advice today and you will be more than satisfied.

Top 10 Emergency Water Restoration and Mold Removal Companies in Toronto – Press Release

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Christmas is supposed to be a merry time, but when that toilet clogs or the sink starts overflowing there’s only one person to call—a plumber.

“We don’t shutdown; we don’t stop taking calls,” said Mike Marugo, Plumbing Service Manager with ABC Home & Commercial Services. “When the phone rings on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day it is someone in a panic.”

With more emergency calls coming in Marugo has an on-call list setup and a backup list to handle the demand. In his time as a plumber he has seen it all.

“I am standing in 6 inches of water,” said Marugo. ” My toilets are overflowing. There is brown stuff coming up in my tub.”

With COVID-19 restrictions and fewer people wanting strangers entering their home, he was unsure what the holidays would look like this year.

“We were expecting to slow down this holiday season,” said Marugo. “We have not (slowed down) we are up 8 to 12% from where we were last Christmas,” said Marugo.

More work, but Marugo says its worth it to help people during the holidays.

“Being able to save someone’s holiday when they were about to pick up and move or all of the Christmas presents were about to get ruined from raw sewage, and you get to save the day,” said Marugo.

His advice is to be patient and know there will be somebody there to help.

“Be kind to your drains, be kind to your water heater, and if they won’t be kind to you then give us a call,” said Marugo.

Marugo says his team goes through a mandatory COVID-19 assessment each day they start work. They also wear masks and other PPE when working in homes.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to give city staff the green light to negotiate an agreement with Aspen Heights Partners to redevelop tracts of city-owned land northeast of downtown, with the goal of building mixed-use properties with a focus on affordable housing.

This is part of a discussion the city has been involved in for five years about how to use the city-owned parcels at the site of the former HealthSouth rehabilitation facility and its parking garage at 1215 Red River and 606 East 12th.

AUSTIN (Texas Tribune) — The gambling empire Las Vegas Sands is pressing forward with its ambitious drive to bring casinos to Texas after a series of recent developments, including the death of its CEO, Republican megadonor Sheldon Adelson, have called into question how much momentum remain behind the cause.

The company made waves in Austin late last year as it built a high-powered lobby team and made clear it saw Texas as its next big expansion opportunity — “the biggest plum still waiting” in the industry. But since then, Comptroller Glenn Hegar released a fiscal forecast for the state that was much better than expected, quieting what had been mounting conversations about how gambling could be a new tax revenue source for the state.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is sending out some stimulus checks through the mail this month.

AARP warns people not to accidentally throw out their stimulus checks, since it was a common mistake during the first round of stimulus. Those who have yet to receive their stimulus through direct deposit should keep an eye on their mail for either a paper check or prepaid debit card.

Christmas is supposed to be a merry time, but when that toilet clogs or the sink starts overflowing there’s only one person to call—a plumber.

Simple Tips To Help You Deal With Plumbing Issues

Were you aware that winterizing your plumbing system is nearly free and can save you potentially thousands of dollars of repairs. If this advice sounds appealing to you, then be sure to check out more of the expert advice given in this article. You will be much happier than if you had to deal with a water crisis during the middle of winter. Don’t pay a plumber midway through the job. Sometimes it is required to put a little money down before the job starts, but don’t ever pay the whole amount before you know the task is done correctly. It is a good thing to know the plumber did his job as he agreed to before he get’s all of his money. If your pipes are prone to freezing, let the water trickle continuously in at least one faucet during weather that is below freezing. This will minimize the chances that the pipes will freeze and leave you without water. If water is continually running through the pipes and trickling out of a faucet, the pipes are less likely to freeze. Put the strainer on top of drains to catch any food that would go down and cause a clog. Your kitchen sink strainer must be cleaned whenever it catches anything. The bathtub strainer will prevent hair from clogging up your drain. Periodically check your pipes for leaks and cracks. These can be forgotten, since pipes are usually hidden away, but checking for leaks and cracks can help you identify a small problem before a big problem occurs. You may have to enlist the help of a family member to turn on and off the water stream as you are checking. To winterize a house that will sit unused during the winter months, you must completely drain all of the pipes. After turning off the main water supply, let all of the water drain from the faucets, toilets, and water heater (turn off the gas). Add a quart of antifreeze to sinks and the tub to prevent water from freezing in the drain trap. Do not let your faucet leak. Did you know a leaky faucet can waste about 150 gallons of water every day? If you have a leak, never ignore it. It could be coming from the faucet or the pipes. Continually check pipes and faucets for extra moisture or small leaks. Find out the plumbing codes in your local area before starting any project. Plumbing codes can vary wildly from area to area and you don’t want to run afoul of the codes. Visit your local building department to find out information or hire a plumber for a day to help you go over your plans and provide advice. Do not ignore a slow flushing toilet. This is usually a sign that something is wrong. It can also cause backups and overflows. The most common causes of a slow flushing toilet are sediment build up, tank malfunctions, or partial clogs. You should periodically check for these problems. Have your pipes in your plumbing system frozen? You can skip the cost of hiring a plumber by using this method. First, open the faucet so steam produced by the thawing process can escape. Begin thawing close to the faucet, and move down the line as each section thaws out. Use a hair dryer or a heat lamp to warm along the pipe. Even though this method consumes quite a bit of time, it is safer than most other heating methods. Furthermore, it requires no cleanup. You can use two different methods to remove clean out plugs. The first way is to get a chisel and a hammer and try to jostle the fitting loose. If that fails, you will have to cut completely through the plug. Now is the perfect chance to make plumbing work for you! Don’t worry; it can be personally tailored for just your home. After reading these previous tips, you should have seen that techniques and equipment are numerous and that anyone can can apply them to their plumbing jobs. It just takes research and experimentation.
